last November, has been admitted by the Chinese Government

at Peking to be contrary to Treaty: and I trust that His

Majesty's Government will take steps not only to resist

this increase in the Tax, which is the insolent rejoinder

of the Canton Government to British protests, but also to

secure with as little delay as possible the complete

removal of the Tax.
